Your skincare routine should be in line with your skin’s needs and this will be different depending on your age. In this article, we will explore some steps you can take to tailor your skincare routine to your age and needs.

In Your 20s

In your 20s, prevention is key.

You don’t want to wait to start a skincare regimen until you have signs of aging because those will be more difficult to treat. The main goals at this age should be hydration and skin protection on top of any specifically targeted treatments for conditions such as acne or rosacea.

Botox can be used at this age to prevent the formation of wrinkles. Professional treatments such as facials, superficial fruit peels, or other types of light exfoliation will help your skin to glow.

In Your 30s

In your 30s, you begin to experience volume loss and a decrease in collagen production.

Your skin will also start to have some trouble holding on to moisture. This is when you will start to look for products that will not only help prevent further damage but also treat any signs of aging.

Adding a retinoid to your regimen along with the moisturizer and sunscreen will help boost the collagen production and speed cell turnover. Some at this age like to turn to Botox and hyaluronic acid fillers to help diminish any signs of aging. Again, professional treatments such as facials, peels or even laser treatments can help keep the skin looking healthy and young.

In Your 40s

In your 40s and above, the rate of volume loss and the decrease in collagen and elastin continue to increase significantly.

Skin will start to get more dehydrated and the loss of fat combined with thinning of the skin will cause hollows under the eyes, jowls, “laugh lines,” and sagging skin to appear. This is when it is more important than ever to have a skin care regimen but more so to treat the skin, rather than prevent aging.

In addition, professional medical treatments such as Botox, hyaluronic acid fillers, lasers and deeper chemical peels will help to minimize or seemingly “reverse” the signs of aging. Continue to use highly moisturizing skin care products, sun protection, and retinoids and supplement with professional treatments to help your skin looking the best it can.

Beyond 50

Beyond 50, if you have not taken diligent care of your skin prior to this, it will be difficult to obtain wrinkle-free skin.

You will most likely have some aging to your skin though an aggressive, medical grade skin care regimen, botox, and fillers will help a great deal. At this point, the skin will have become very loose and thin and professional medical treatments will have the most impact. This may or may not include facial cosmetic surgery which can be recommended by your physician.
